Murray’s Competition – Part 1!

Not relevant at all - My eldest at Niagra Falls.

So much is spoken about all these cheap carriers. Everyone tells me that they can fly all the way around the world for 10 bucks and still have enough change left to do a airport check-in with RyanAir.

So, let’s put it to the test.

The challenge is to fly around the world for the least amount of money. There are some rules:

1. The trip must include a touchdown in Europe, Middle East, Far East, Africa, Indian sub-continent, Australasia, Northern and Southern Continental America. You can start from where you like, but your start and finish must be at the same airport.

2. The itinerary must be fly-able. For example, if you connect from a legacy carrier to a low-cost carrier, the connection must be practical.

3. Backtracking and anything else is allowed.

4. There is no time limit, but extra points awarded for the fastest trip.

Prizes – we need some. So would any airline or hotel group who would like to contribute some free flights or hotel nights, please let me know. Now would be good. So, won’t cost you any money just some flights and hotel nights! And a lot of Twitter/ Social Networking promotion.

These are the basics. So, before we launch away, if anyone has any comments suggestions or tweaks, let me know now. The prize, by the way, would be for the cheapest workable itinerary – you don’t actually have to fly it (unless an airline will sponsor such a prize!)

    Hello Murray

Well this works as a skeleton route if you count London as Europe which may be stretching your rules a wee bit…

London – Dubai – Singapore – Australia – New Zealand – LA surface Miami – UK on Virgin, SIA and Air NZ at £946 plus £323 tax.

However a decent travel agent (like yourself Murray) would tell you that you could do this for the same money

London – Dubai or Delhi or Tokyo – Bangkok surface Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) – Singapore – Borneo – Australia – New Zealand – The Cook Islands – USA – UK

And then you could get a flexible-ish Dubai – Nairobi return in for £295 Turkish, a bit more on Qatar, the 5* airline..

And a very very cheap and fixed dated Miami – Panama City return for about £160 which might be pushing it as describing it as South America..but a wee trek (!) across the Darian Gap…or you could get a Miami – Bogota return for £215..or you could get a cheaper one way and pax could surface back – think thats a bit unethical though..

Thats £1716 all in – although am at home and no calculator – not bad for a fairly flexible RTW (Sorry guys but this is a point worth ramming home – this skeleton RTW is a 12 month flexible ticket which costs £20 to date change and if you break your leg in NZ they will reroute you home for £100 – very very important! rant over) & getting in all major continents

Worth pointing out you could get that route on 6 Continent One World or a biggo World Journey but that’s biggo bucks – almost £3K all in.

    Good luck with the competition

    Cheers
    Stuart

ps. If London isnt recommended as being in Europe can I suggest a Eurostar to Bruge or a cheapo low cost job…
